On Monday, Oct. 26, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health announced there have been 9,657 confirmed COVID-19 deaths among Massachusetts residents since Jan. 21.

Massachusetts has been averaging 9 COVID-19 deaths per day since September, according to the DPH. If Massachusetts maintains this rate, the state will reach 10,000 deaths by Christmas.

Nationwide there have been 224,601 COVID-19 deaths, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Massachusetts has reported the six most COVID-19 related deaths out of 50 states plus D.C. and New York City.

NYC leads the nation with a total number of deaths with nearly 24,000 confirmed since the start of the pandemic.

Texas is the state that has seen the most death with 17,504 reported there as of Oct. 26. California has experienced slightly fewer fatalities with 17,345 lost to COVID-19.

Florida and New Jersey are the next most deadly states for COVID-19 with 16,429 reported in Florida and 16,258 reported in New Jersey.
